School Issues- write your ideas and thoughts here.

What do you think we should be talking about in school council?

We focus on teaching and learning. What helps you to learn? What could we all (teachers and students) to help you to learn better? We all want you to achieve the very best you can. How can we help each other to do that?

Remember – we are about finding ways to solve problems. How can WE make our school better?

Put your ideas here or bring them to the meeting. Any FGS student can put their ideas here, they do not need to be a school council rep.

Thank you for having me in to talk to you today, it was great to meet you all! Don’t forget to ask me for your own personal log book so you can start recording your volunteering hours and be getting towards achieving one of our volunteering awards!

If you have any questions about the awards, want to know more about them or about volunteering in general you can email me at ben.hodge@vanl.org.uk or you can ‘phone me on 01724 845155.

  2. Jamielea and Tyler says:

Hi everyone. My thoughts were that we should talk more about the toilets and the dinning room because they are a main concern in the school as pupils. The toilets are always out of toilet paper and the dinner halls have black stuff in the corners.

Finally managed to subscribe to the updates, I’ve also registered on Word Press; no idea if I needed to do that but oh well. A point I forgot to bring up in the meeting was about our old friend Optimum. It’s been going for a year now and I’m not clear on how well it went, more importantly how the students feel about the new scheme. ‘If you don’t do your three challenges do you get punished?’ < I've been asked that quite a bit but I have no clue. I thought the Power Point about the successes was really good, reminded me of a x-factor montage! :D Did every year have that?

Tis cool to have a site actually!

  4. Roy Chan says:

I think the school should have someone like a teacher or someone else to walk around school at lunch time, because at lunch time, somewhere at the tennis court, always people smoking,or climbing over the small gate. And i just want to ask, what is the dinner lady actually doing down the field?

    • rachelluckynumber7 says:

it’s good that you pointed that out seen as it is a problem, only issue that I can think of is that the dinner break is for the poor old teachers as well. Don’t think they would want to give up more of their time :)
There’ll be other solutions to this so bring it up at the next meeting :D

about the dinner staff, no idea. Sorry…

      • stephanie hutchinson says:

it not fair that the teacher should give up there break just beacause of people smoking

  5. Mrs Evans says:

We will raise this at the next school council meeting, Roy.

Rachel, that is on the agenda for the meeting.

  6. Adam says:

Hey everyone.I think that the parents should be aloud to sea the pupils sanctiones from home because some people cross them out of there planner and there mum and dad dont know.i also think we should be able to see our sanctiones from home or school and our parents should be able to see our lesson records so they know if people are not going to lesson.

  7. Mrs Evans says:

    Adam,
That is a really good idea. The school is working on that very thing and parents shoud be able to see their child’s serco report very soon. I think as part of that parents will also be able to see what lessons their child goes to and all the end of term reports for the year.

  8. juliahall291 says:

I’ve been asked that maybe we could have a couple of bins on the field maybe as a lot of people cant be bothered to walk down to the quad area to put their rubbish away, so we could reduce the amount of litter on the field.

    • Roy Chan says:

i got this idea too, because there ain’t a bin on the field,if you want to put your rubbish, you need to walk about 3 minutes, that takes too long,so people just drop the rubbish on the field instead of walking 3 minutes to find a bin

      • Rachel says:

this has always been something the school council have been puzzling over.

One idea we had was to have portable bins which could be placed on the field. This never got followed through for some reason or another.

        The issues of this system where;

☮ who would be responsible for the bins being taken on and off the field

☮ the welfare of the poor bins themselves (anything short of being concreted into the floor usually gets wrecked)

        ☮ material/COST

☮ The design was more of a fold out frame which you put a bin-bag on but I guess that can be revised.

There will be more information but it’s a miracle my memory has discovered this amount let alone any more.

i think the girls toilets north , south and east blocks need painting again they are not up to the best standreds

  10. Mrs Evans says:

June and Stephanie, there is a school council meeting on this very second! Why are you not here? :)

  11. Mrs Evans says:

You could either bring this up to your rep or you could attend the next full council meeting. Keep an eye on this site.

  12. reece hewitt says:

I think amys and kyles idea is good because a lot of girls in our year (8) like football instead of netball or you could do a mixed football team =) and we should have some more bins as kyle sims had posted = )

    • kyle sims says:

well i was talking about more bins…. bins should be scattered around the field so that there is less litter and more bins :) i hope u like my idea i might post more and cya for now :)

      • Mrs McMahon says:

I’ve noticed how much rubbish there is in the school site, I’d love to do something to help or maybe we could have an assembly on the importance of putting rubbish into the bins. It’s can’t be nice for visitors to see it. :(

  13. Mrs Evans says:

We will bring these ideas up at today’s school council meeting. Keep checking in for the minutes.
    Thanks

  14. Ryan says:

I had an idea for the school council website,
    A poll system,
So say someone had an idea i.e, having more bins on the field. There would be an on-line poll to see what people think about the idea,
Then with the information the school council can make more balanced decisions.

  15. Aiden says:

I was thinking of a teacher to pupil emailing system. This is because when the weather is bad we stay open which is a good thing but for people that live quite far away and have to walk it can take a long time. If we had an emailing system like this we could have our work emailed to us at home if the weather is bad or a pupil is off school.

  16. george sturman (294 Rep) says:

The school council are thinking of opening the large field again but we WILL have trouble with litter like we did last time. has anyone got any solutions?
Also we were thinking about a portable bin but we were worried about vandleisum towards the bin or even theft of it. again any solutions?

  17. Holly Ryan says:

Hiya Mrs Evans! I have been talking to a group of friends and we have been thinking on The 7th of may, we should do some kind of memorial for Carrington, and we got told to ask you.
    Please Reply!
    xxxxxxxxx

  18. Mrs Evans says:

    Hi, Holly
That is a good idea. Why don’t you have some thoughts about what you would like to do and come and see me about it? We will ask Mr Lawrence together.

    • Holly Ryan says:

do you think that Mr Lawrence would let Ben Legair And Ian Mullen spray paint a memorial for carrington on the wall? and if he doesnt agree with that could we do like a minute silence or something?

  19. zantanna hall says:

Quite a few people have agreed that going to Flamingo Land ebery year does not make us want to do well , most people have said they do not want to go.
Could there maybe be a discussion on to go some where else for the end of year trip , such as alton tower ect..
    thanks.

  20. Mrs Evans says:

I spoke with Mr Harmer and he said, “Already booked I’m afraid – when dealing in such big numbers you have to get in early. SC have talked about this before. The only theme parks in range are Cleethorpes, Lightwater and Flamingo – I’ll come along to next meeting if you want.”
So those are your options. Alton Towers would be very, very costly. The school could not cover the cost and every pupil would have to put money in which would prevent some pupils from going. Also because it is so far away we would have to set off very early (7 am ish) and get back late and this would cause lots of problems. Staff with children could not go and buses would not be able to get pupils here and so on.
If you want to bring it up at the next full meeting (which will be in C22) and we will talk about it there.
Good question and well done for asking it.

THE GIRLS TOIETS. and boys? never been in the boys as im a girl. but i think they need cleaning more often. toilet paper check every day or so. grafiti cleans and the taps working properly and fix locks on doors

makeup issue! i think that makeup should be allowed but a minium amount i know its a year 11 privalage but so many people use it anyway, but year 11′s are encouraging other years to wear makeup i just think its fair that way.. its not affecting our education, i do appreciate that teachers think were to young to wear it or not, but teenagers wont stop using it. like i said the rules are appreciated but not enough for people to follow them,

  23. luke grice says:

i think that for dinner if youde like to go in the SANDWITCH BAR at dinner. you should be aloud to take your food out and not have to always sit it. i do agree with the fact of hot dinner not beeing braught out. there may be accidents. please post my comment on the wall it is resonable.

  24. Anonymous says:

Lately I think that school have been making a big issue about uniform, mainly regarding shoes and socks, I think a different approach to the whole matter should be undertaken.

Instead of punishing people who are wearing brightly coloured socks you should reward the people who already wear plain socks with credits. You should then make reward trips (like Flamingo Land) require more credits and offer more reward trips. People would have a greater incentive to earn credits and people would realise that the easiest way to earn credits would be to wear plainly coloured socks, therefore people would wear plain socks, the teachers won’t need to sanction people wearing bright socks and the school doesn’t have to spend money washing socks and buying them.

It’s a better system all around, especially over something so trivial such as socks, the one problem that may occur is that if form tutors checked socks weekly people would only decide to wear black socks on those days and therefore the school would have organise checks randomly every week.

Would be great to hear some feedback on this and perhaps have it implemented.

  25. Mrs Evans says:

    HI,
Firstly I really do encourage you to leave a name – we need to know who you are so we can invite you to a school council meeting and because, well, it just seems like a nice thing to let us know who you are.
I can tell you why we make a point of school uniform.
We believe that our students have a massive potential for success and we want them to dress for that. We want every single member of this school to take pride in themselves and take themselves and their education seriously.
We think students should dress smartly for school because it tells us how they see themselves. It is about self respect.
We think all of these things are more important than coloured socks.

I can’t respond to these suggestions because I am just the facilitator for school council but why don’t you come to a meeting and talk about your thoughts with the rest of school council?
We have a meeting this Monday at 12:40 in C22 and you are very welcome to come.
You won’t get feedback here – but you will when you meet with school council. Come along- we would love to have you.

PS I have not heard anything about buying and washing socks- does not mean it’s not happening but it is news to me. :)
